Medicare rebates for speech pathology

Medicare logo

We’re a Medicare-registered provider.

You may be able to claim rebates to help reduce the cost of speech therapy. To access Medicare-funded services, you’ll need a referral from your GP.

Below, you’ll find the three funding options available and the current Medicare rebate amount for a 45-minute one-on-one session at Join the Conversation Speech Pathology.

If your child has a long-term condition (lasting 6+ months) and needs support from multiple health professionals, your GP may be able to create a Chronic Condition Management Plan.

  • Up to 5 sessions per calendar year
  • 💳 Out-of-pocket cost: $132.19 per session
  • ⏱ 45 minutes of one-to-one speech assessment or therapy, tailored to your child
  • Rebate: You’ll pay the full session fee on the day, and receive $61.80 back from Medicare.
  • Referral required from your GP

If your child has (or is being assessed for) autism or another eligible neurodevelopmental condition:

  • Up to 8 Medicare-rebated assessment sessions - These are used to help confirm a diagnosis and understand your child’s developmental profile.
  • Up to 20 Medicare-rebated therapy sessions - These can be used for speech pathology, occupational therapy, psychology, or physiotherapy.
  • 💳 Out-of-pocket cost: $108.79 per session
  • ⏱ 45 minutes of one-to-one speech assessment or therapy, tailored to your child
  • Rebate: You’ll pay the full session fee on the day, and receive $85.20 back from Medicare
  • Referral must come from a paediatrician or child psychiatrist under the Helping Children with Autism (HCWA) or Better Start for Children with Disability Medicare items.
  • These sessions are a one-time allocation and do not renew yearly

Children of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background may be eligible for:

  • Up to 5 follow-up allied health sessions per year, including speech therapy
  • 💳 Out-of-pocket cost: $132.19 per session
  • ⏱ 45 minutes of one-to-one speech assessment or therapy, tailored to your child
  • Rebate: You’ll pay the full session fee on the day, and receive $61.80 back from Medicare
  • These sessions can be used in addition to the GPCCMP plan

  • We’ll provide a receipt with all the details needed to claim through Medicare.
  • Claims can be submitted through the Medicare app, your MyGov account, or at a Medicare office.

Please note: Medicare rebates do not cover the full cost of your session. The remaining “gap” is your out-of-pocket cost payable at your appointment as listed above.

please note

The rebate amounts listed are based on the current Medicare schedule (as of 01/07/2025). Medicare updates these from time to time, so the exact amount you can claim may change. We’ll always do our best to keep families up to date with the latest information.
